2011 Lizard Island Updates

Two more tags have surfaced in the Lizard Island Race, bringing the total up to three. On January 8, the Fish 2 tag reported from the middle of Papua Gulf - a distance of 334 nautical miles (619 km) from where it was tagged. This 250-pound marlin was caught by angler Phil Scott on board the Reelistic, and they now hold the second-place spot in the Race. This morning we received a report from the Fish 5 tag, which was deployed on a 900-pound black marlin back on October 16, caught by Bill Borkan on the Castille 111. This fish has made an amazing journey of 2,729 nautical miles (5,073 km) in just 86 days, to a point 127 nm east of Phoenix Island - putting it squarely in first place. Congratulations to Bill Borkan and Captain Dean Beech, as well as the whole Lizard Island team for this amazing result!
That leaves us with two more tags to go in the Lizard Island race, both of which are due up in early February. Given the diversity of results we've seen already in the first three tags, it will be interesting to see what happens next! |
