A Fourth Tag Reports in the Home Stretch

On November 9 a fourth tag reported at a distance of 522 nautical miles east-southeast of Kona, putting it in third place.  Dubbed “Merlin the Marlin” by its sponsors, Patricia Steele and Sherry Vann, this 180-pound fish, caught by angler Barry Alty on board the Bwana, was the 10th and final marlin tagged in the 2011 HIBT Great Marlin Race.

So with four tags up and six to go, the Kona Game Fishing Club-Taiyo fish (Fish 5) holds the lead at 1053 nautical miles, with Fish 4 from the Louisiana Hot Sauce Angling Club running a close second at 1028 nm.  Merlin the Marlin (Fish 10) is in third place, followed closely by Fish 2, sponsored by the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club Teams 1&2 along with Steven Chow.

The first tag deployed in the 2011 Race will reach its programmed, 120-day deployment date on November 25th, with the remaining tags due up between then and December 10.  As always, we’ll update the site as new tags report in, and will allow 10 extra days for any non-reporting tags to come up before finalizing the results.

More to come soon…
